Katie Kitty was the most popular kitten in school.
She had the prettiest dresses. She had the most toys. She was always the first to have the latest neat things. All the other kittens would gather around and say:
“Meow meow, Katie Kitty, you’re the cat’s meow!”
But Katie Kitty was popular for another reason: She was also very nice. She greeted everyone with her lovely smile. She hugged all her friends. She even shared her mother’s delicious fish cookies.
Every week, Katie Kitty would join her friends in line at Penny Penguin’s Toy Shop in town. The best shiny new toy would come out, and everyone would want it. Katie was always the first to get it.
All the kittens wanted the newest toys. They would make fun of each other and call each other mean names if they were late getting the new toys. Katie didn’t think that was very nice. She would go and play with other, nicer kittens instead.
One day, a new kitten showed up in school. Kelly Kitty was a shy kitten. Katie Kitty tried to welcome her, but she was too scared to talk.
Katie Kitty tried to introduce Kelly Kitty to her friends. But Kelly Kitty just looked down at her paws.
The next day, Katie Kitty sat next to Kelly Kitty at lunch and said:
“Meow Meow, Kelly Kitty, would you like one of my mother’s delicious fish cookies?”
Kelly Kitty took the cookie with a smile and gobbled it down. It was delicious. She thanks Katie Kitty for being so nice to her.
Katie Kitty asked Kelly Kitty why she was so shy. Kelly Kitty sadly told her:
“Meow Meow, Katie Kitty, I do not have the newest toys. I am afraid all the kids will call me names and be mean to me.”
Katie Kitty was sad for her new friend. But she had an idea. She quickly took out the latest toy and set it next to Kelly Kitty. Kelly Kitty looked at Katie Kitty and asked:
“Meow Meow, Katie Kitty, isn’t this your toy? Won’t the other kittens be mean to you if you don’t have it?”
Katie Kitty smiled and stood up. She yelled out at the top of her lungs to all the other kittens in the lunch room.
“Meow Meow, Every Kitty, look at Kelly Kitty! She has the most neat new toy! I wish I had this toy!”
All the other kittens gathered around Kelly Kitty and Katie Kitty. They said nice things to Kelly Kitty, and they all quickly became friends. However, the other kittens noticed that Katie Kitty didn’t have the newest toy, and they began to make fun of her.
After school, Kelly Kitty ran up to Katie Kitty and tried to give her back her new toy. Katie Kitty did not want it back.
“Meow Meow, Kelly Kitty, this is your toy now. It will help you get to know the other kittens better.”
“Meow Meow, Katie Kitty, but now they are being mean to you. Why would you do such a thing for me?”
Katie Kitty just smiled. She didn’t mind not being the most popular kitten in school this week. She had made a new friend happy. That was better than even her mother’s delicious fish cookies. She looked at her new friend and said:
“Meow Meow, Kelly Kitty, sometimes you have to give away something important to you so you can make other people happy. Sometimes the feeling of making a friend happy is the greatest feeling of them all.”
